This evening at bedtime, Linus said, “when I grow up I want to be a fire fighter so I can help people. I will be Fire Fighter Linus.” Luke and I looked at each other and smiled. Moments like this are why we love being parents.

We can’t get enough of her smiles and laughter!

Big day for Clara…first time sitting in a shopping cart. Sweet Linus helped make sure she was happy and safe.

We took advantage of the beautiful weather and headed into DC for one last time with our Swiss visitor. After checking out the newly renovated postal museum (it’s fantastic!), we ate lunch at Union Station, then we headed out on a DC Duck tour. If you aren’t familiar with a Duck, it’s a vehicle that can drive on land and in the water. Now this was very, very exciting for little Linus. His favorite part of the tour was entering and exiting the water. On our 90+ minute tour, we saw many sights including the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial, Pentagon, and the Capitol Building. It was a fun adventure for all of us!

We had fun exploring in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania today. Our adventure started at the Gettysburg museum, then we ventured to the Soldier’s National Cemetery which is the location where Abraham Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address (the site is now marked by the Soldier’s Monument pictured in the fourth photo). Next we stopped for some ice cream in the town center. Finally we drove around the Gettysburg battlefield. We were fortunate to run in to some civil war era reenactors. One gentleman was happy to play his fife and penny flute for Linus.

School may have started, but the summer heat is definitely still here. It was over 90F with a heat index of almost 100F so we headed to play in our local splash pad. Linus was excited to have all of the fountains to himself. His favorite activity was filling the bucket with water and dumping it on his head. Clara really enjoyed watching her silly brother. We finished our outing with a lovely picnic lunch in the shade.

This…is…awesome

We had a wonderful afternoon in Harper’s Ferry National Historic Park today. After a picnic lunch and a walk around the lovely town, we stopped for some ice cream (definitely the highlight of Linus’s day). Later, Linus performed a song that he came up with right on the spot (it was quite long, but very hilarious).

Linus’s started preschool today…sniff, sniff! Where did the last 3 1/2 years go?! After snapping a few photos at home, we went to Linus’s friend’s house to get a couple photos of them together. They were very excited to start school today. Since we are required to drop the kids off in front of the preschool (due to a shortage of parking), the last photo shows Linus walking in with one of the teachers. Apparently he was fine until he saw his little buddy crying inside, then he started crying too. He said the teacher gave him a hug and he felt better. When I asked him why he was crying, he answered, “because I missed you Mommy.” I felt my heart completely melt right then and there. On the ride home, he excitedly told me all about his day. He talked about singing songs, playing the “shaker” instrument, reading a book about a rabbit’s first day of school, coloring with orange colored pencils, eating a snack, and playing on the playground. He’s already excited to go back on Thursday. Definitely a successful first day of school!

We took advantage of the last unofficial day of summer by getting ice cream from our neighborhood ice cream truck (Linus’s first time!), and swimming in the pool. Ah, summer…we shall miss you!

Thanksgiving in August? Why not?! Luke was excited to experiment with cooking a turkey on our grill. Our Swiss visitor was thrilled to eat a turkey dinner again after 10 years. And in case you’ve ever wondered…Thanksgiving dinner tastes just as good even when it’s 90F outside.

We had a fabulous time in Washington D.C. today! This was Clara’s first time visiting our nation’s capital and she handled the adventure very well. Linus was very excited about many of our activities today including riding the metro, seeing the animals in the National Museum of Natural History, and standing on a police segway. It was especially fun to share the adventure with our sweet visitor!

Linus had his first (unofficial) day of preschool today. His school held an open house this morning where students were able to meet their teachers and to see their classrooms. Since parents aren’t allowed to accompany students into the classroom next week when school actually starts, we took our first-day-of-school photos today. He seems excited to go to preschool  especially because his favorite little buddy will be there too.

What a wonderful day for a little sightseeing in downtown Leesburg!

We had a great time hiking with our Swiss guest at Great Falls National Park today. Linus was a great, independent little hiker and Clara was quite content riding in the backpack-carier. What a fun adventure!
